James Henry Breasted and James Harvey Robinson, The Human Adventure
|
Alas, this book has been located. According to Time.com this book really consists of two different books written by two different authors. One book is called "The Conquest of Civilization" By James Henry Breasted. The other is called "The Ordeal of Civilizaton" by James Harvey Robinson. These books can be found used on Amazon.
The Conquest of Civilization delves into the journey humans have gone from beastial savagry to modern day multi-millionaires. It talks about how civilizations formed and where they went from there. It attempts to capture the human spirit.
Excerpts (interesting questions) from The Conquest of Civilization
The exact title of the other book is: The Ordeal of Civilization; a sketch of the development and world-wide diffusion of our present-day institutions and ideas. It is about 769 pages long. I also talks about the rise of mankind throughout the ages. I cannot find an only copy or any documents about this book.

Wells, The Outline of History (relating chapters)
|
This massive 2 volume work covers the entire history of mankind! For this section it's probably best to read the following chapters.
Gods and Stars, Priests and Kings
Serfs, Slaves, Social Classes, and Free Individuals
The Hebrew Scriptures and the Prophets
The Aryan-Speaking Peoples in Prehistoric Times
The Outline of History

Brian Brown, The Wisdom of China

Again this is a great contrast book. A lot of these books coming up are very in depth with Christianity. These books were written around 400 BC.
Will Durant considred Confucious one of the 10 greatest thinkers of all time.
The entire book.
Confucius: Analects; Confucius: The Doctrine of the Mean; Confucius: Great Learning; Mencius: The Real Man; Lao Tzu: Tao-Teh-King; Lao Tzu: Wu-Wei; Lao Tzu: Precepts and Sayings; Chuang Tzu; Yang Chu
But hey! What about Buddhism, and Buddha?
And I think it's important to know about the Military History of China

At this point in our history lesson we are still pre-Jesus and one could save the new testament for when we get into "Rome" or "The Age of Christianity".

Elie Faure, History of Art (4 vol), vol. 1 ch. 1-3, vol. 2 ch. 1-3
|
After reading two of the five volumes of this title I'm not sure why Durant put it on the list. This is a history book. Although there are pictures on about every 3rd page there are too little to appreciate. The history in this book agree's with the other books already read about history. My conclusion is that in 1929 when this list of 100 books was thought up this was a good art book. Today there are many art appreciation books that I think are better than this history book with few pictures. So in place of the book I will link to pages with art of this period.

Personal note: I do not think the Mayan culture should be overlooked, and since it is starting in the same time period and there is no other place for it I want to add it to this page:
